Health Organization Case Study Hospital Corporation of America or HCA is one of the leading providers in healthcare in the United States. Founded in 1968 as a single entity it now encompasses 165 hospitals and 113 freestanding surgery centers located in 20 states and the United Kingdom (Hospital Corporation of America [HCA], n.d.). With over 27 million patient encounters each year they continue to make strides in clinical research and development of protocols utilizing evidence-based practices. In 2014 The Joint Commission released its list of Top Performers on Key Quality Measures and 115 hospitals on the list were HCA facilities (HCA, 2014). One of the best examples of this is with their insight into the behavioral health needs in the communities. Realizing that reimbursement issues make it difficult to provide patients with physical and mental health options at the same time HCA is committed to trying to find a balance whether it is addressing patients in the emergency departments that have behavioral issues or the cardiac patient that is depressed. By working with military bases near their hospitals they have been able to identify what the needs are and have either expanded their psychiatric services by opening new beds or opening new facilities (HCA, 2014).
Network Growth
No health care organization can prosper without being fiscally responsible and future oriented. HCA has been able to sustain and grow their admissions, surgeries, emergency room visits while increasing their revenue. Their market shares have increased by more than 1% over a three-year period (HCA Investor Update, 2016). By diversifying their revenue mix, they are staying ahead of the curve and expanding and growing in hopes of being the provider of choice.
