Community health care is a broad and every expanding topic which underpins many social, political and economic decisions. For community nurses to provide optimal care to their clients an understanding of the health care principles is essential to how they will be provided within the nursing and community setting. This essay will discuss how knowledge and understanding effects health literacy and the underlying health principles that are relevant to a large Afghanistan refugee population, while considering possible intervention that are necessary to improve health literacy with the targeted group. The aim will be how to best promote health literacy and decision making related to mental health.

Health literacy is a fundamental component for clients to understand and make beneficial decision relating to their health care. In Australia 60% of adults are deemed to possess less than adequate health literacy standards to make informed decisions relating to their health. The literature indicates that low literacy is linked with poorer health outcomes, lack of effective participation in health decision making, poorer health status, higher levels of chronic disease and higher hospital admissions REFERENCE (ACSQHC, 2012). Health literacy is defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), 1998 as “The cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to understand and use information in ways that promote and maintain good health”.
