The one thing that bothered me the most was that we see our country represented in good health, yet Americans spend a lot of money on their medical care and still live a much shorter and very sick lives compared to other countries. America only ranked thirtieth for life expectancies and more babies die in our country than in lower poverty countries. I really did not realize that forty-seven million people in our country did not have health coverage.
People that are well off and are in the top one percent of their income have more money that the bottom ninety percent of others income put together. This was very disturbing fact to learn. The more education, power, money and status an American can gain in life, the less stress that individual is likely to have. Stress can release something called cortisol, which can cause immune issues with the body. In the video it showed that Americans that were less stressed in life lived longer that Americans that were stressed out. When it showed the different areas of Louisville KY, and how the death rate was higher in lower poverty levels it was a shame. The man that was the CEO, he spoke of having time to actually exercise, spend time with his family, go outside without fear

Life expectancy depends on the resources that are readily available to the Americans, the education they receive, how much money they make in life, and where they live at. Social standings will always influence a person’s life. Poverty levels decrease the control on a person’s life as well. When all control is lost this leads to a much stressed induvial and puts one’s body in the survival mode. By the body doing this, it leads to a lot of medical problems down the road. Americans in lower poverty levels also work in higher demand jobs, in turn, this does lead to a lot more stress for this individual

Thru out the film there were many real life stories told and the one that made me question people and life was one incident that happened in California. When a lady rushes her baby to the nearest hospital because her baby had a high fever and was denied treatment due to their health care provider, which led to the baby death. Listening to this made me feel devastated, angry, sad, and frustrated, feelings that I wish I never have to feel when it comes to our health…

I think it was very courageous of Susan Hamovitch to make a documentary of her family’s most painful, protective secret at that time. In the early 90’s, when people were judged, criticized, made fun of, and in some cases even punished for what Susan tried to reveal to the world, was very daring. It must have been not easy for Susan, nor for her family, to reveal their family’s secret to the world as the mother said to Susan when she told her her intention of making a documentary of their family secret “well, you’ve certainly dropped a bombshell.” It was a bombshell for the family because of what they kept secret of their whole life was about to be revealed to the world. The secret of the family was Alan, who never developed the ability to speak as his…

The movie In Sickness and in Wealth, gives an eye opening realization to the effect of our health based on our socioeconomic status. It appears to create a domino effect, the lower income you have the greater risk you have for health problems and a shortened life span. The health care system in the United States has many flaws. The United States spends two trillion a year on health care, almost half in the world, yet has one of the lowest life expectancy rates. Today, the top one percent of Americans owns more wealth than the bottom 90% combined (Staff, 2008).…

It is truly devastating how can single mothers survive with having such low income.
