Health Fair Reflection

I believed that I was able to accomplish some of my goals within the 90 hours. Having the Health Fair was a great tool that helped me reach the short-term and medium-term goals. Students gained more knowledge about healthy food choices and became familiar with correct portion sizes. From the feedback, many students decided to adopt healthier eating habits. Hopefully on a long-term basis student’s attitudes towards nutrition and portion sizes will help decrease the risk of nutrition-related health problems & chronic diseases that are affected by diet. Also, another long-term goal is that students increased adoption of healthy food practices which will result in a healthy school and community. The main thing I learned about myself while doing

Summary of Activities Outside of our meeting on Sunday October 8th, I spent an hour looking up registration letters online, just to see what other examples are available. I was amazed at how many different registration styles there were. I coordinated with my classmates on clip art for the registration letter and downloaded the sample my professor uploaded for us. I completed the letter and I believe it’s perfect. I can’t wait for everyone to see it also.…

It has come to my attention that the recent obesity epidemic will soon be addressed during next week’s combined town meeting. Students from Algonquin have demanded policy change regarding the requirements for our school lunches. The food currently being offered to adolescents in the cafeteria, school store, café area, and are filled with sugars and carbohydrates, that likely promote an unhealthy diet and continued obesity. Upon watching the documentary FED UP in Health, a coalition of students will be asking for policy change, citing the movie as their evidence. FED UP argues that the worldwide epidemic of obesity is endangering our children as a result of the increased sugar consumption.…

Aside from utilizing statistics to describe the distribution of population health, I was also taught how to apply statistics to community health program evaluations. In HLTH391, we utilized quantitative and qualitative survey measures to determine if we reached our set objectives and goals of the health fair. The grant proposal assignment in HLTH490 also required the class to apply statistic and research methods to determine outcome and impact evaluation of the program they were seeking funding for. In order to evaluate the set objectives of our grant proposal, my group and I sought to administer pretest and posttest evaluations at baseline and at program end. At my internship site, I have also been utilizing statistical measures in order to determine the health outcomes of the prenatal moms.…

While this is important, the learning needs to start at school. Students spend a large majority of their day in school, with that, having healthy meals during this time is imperative to the children’s learning process. In addition, not every family is capable to provide their children with a bagged lunch every day. Therefore, the student could be getting their main source of food through the free and reduced lunches. Even with a healthy home, young kids need a guiding hand at school to help them to continue to make healthy choices during the school day.…

In elementary, I remember getting mouthwatering, giant cinnamon rolls once every few months as a desert for school lunch. Now many years later, the cinnamon rolls served at school are much smaller, have far less frosting, and have turned “whole grain”. Unfortunately, cinnamon rolls are not the only things that have been changed. Since elementary school, my classmates and I have noticed smaller serving sizes, fewer varieties of food choices, and more canned or frozen food. The change in cinnamon rolls, along with almost every other school lunch item can be blamed on the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act.…

Over the course of history, this earth has endured many diseases and plagues such as, the black plague, yellow fever, and influenza. Jumping into the unknown has never deterred me. I enjoy, more than anything, the challenge of finding creative ways to solve problems. Last year I participated in the University of Delaware’s first Healthcare Hackathon: a 24-hour event where teams of students worked to develop solutions to Delaware’s healthcare and public health issues. My team and I were tasked with rising obesity levels. We worked overnight to create a plan which addressed the social and physical determinants of health by improving both access and affordability of fresh fruits and vegetables in Delaware’s food deserts.…

Over the course of this class, I have learned quite a bit about what it takes to actually eat healthy and take care of my body. Coming into this class, I thought that I had already figured out most of what I had needed to know. Very quickly, I started to realize that there is a whole lot more to eating healthy than I had thought. Being as health conscious as I am, I immediately found the class very interesting, as it is one of the only classes that I have ever taken that can actually be applied to life on the daily. That is why I found the “My Diet Analysis” project to be extremely interesting.…

Should Students Have The Right To Chose What They Eat For Lunch? The choice of lunch for students should not be one that is made by someone else, students should have the right to chose what they eat for lunch. A healthy lunch for a growing student is a principal component for the development and growth of a child. There are many components of growth that cannot be changed, but weight and health from choice of food can always be revised. Parents often want the best health for their kids, and sometimes physical activity is not as easy to facilitate, which is why eating healthy is exceedingly important.…

Everyone has time to be healthy Freshman 15 is an expression used to describe an arbitrary amount of weight students put on in their first year of post secondary studies, usually due to unhealthy eating and poor exercise habits. Students say they struggle finding a balance between work, leisure, and maintaining healthy habits, leading to a lack of exercise, and poor nutrition. These complaints are clearly caused by a lack of intrinsic motivation and a growing status quo of complacency, rather than actual time constraints. Despite the vast number of home workouts that one can complete in under ten minutes, students will still excuse themselves from any form of physical activity, in favour of inactive alternatives. The problem is further pushed…

This class was actually very interesting and really helped me to open my eyes to the ways in which I have been not focusing on my physical health. When it comes to my present activity level, a lot has changed from the beginning of this class. I have to say that before this class I never made physical activity a priority in my day. I counted walking to class as a form of physical activity, which it was, but not enough. I am a lazy person and would rather be laying around watching Netflix than going to the gym.…
