In the field of health education, there are roles, responsibilities, and certifications necessary for advancement. This stems from the need for a common standard for the practice of health education (Cortrell, Girvan, McKenzie & Seabert, 2015). This is contained in the seven areas of responsibility, competencies, sub-competencies, which are the required skills for the practice of health education (Cortrell, Girvan, McKenzie & Seabert, 2015). As a public health professional, this is a competency I have mastered to an extent. However, as a student of health education, this is a potential area for growth for me. Furthermore, health impactors vary to a very large extent and could be elusive, requiring the best assessment possible (Gilmore, 2012). There is tremendous growth opportunities for me here, because human behavior which is a major health impactor is constantly changing. However, my strength is the identification of basic behaviors that influence the health of the population under study, as well as factors that influence these behaviors. For example, during my internship I worked with seniors and determined the reason for their lack of sustained public health best practices to improve their health. I discovered it was because many of them lived alone and lacked a support system. This prompted an intervention program, where I and my team placed them in little groups to support one another.
