Health Disparities In Canada

I agree that there will always be health disparities. Even if everyone has the same access to health care, there will always be those who do not take care of themselves or who end up with diseases that are out of their control. It is sad that only those with money get the proper health care needed regardless of the outcome. The same is true when I was growing up in Jamaica, if citizens did not have finances they were not able to go to the doctor. Many have died because they could not afford treatment. This is a trend in many third world countries. My cousin lives in Canada where health insurance is provided to all citizens regardless of socioeconomic status. I was so jealous of her when I compared my maternity leave to hers. She was able to leave work about 6 months earlier and return about 6 months later than I was able to and got a percentage of her pay and medical treatment. Regardless of some failures in the health care system, Canada has one of the highest life expectancies and lowest infant mortality rate. According to Canada Health Care, “Regardless of the political debate, Canada does boast one of the highest life expectancies (about 80 years) and lowest infant mortality rates of industrialized countries, which many attribute to Canada's health care system.” (p.1). One great example given to us in our text this week is pertaining to diabetes among American Indians. One of the reasons for not seeking medical help is distrust for White authorities or for the medical system in general. According to Henderson, “One subject said that she would not take her (changed) diabetes medicine because she felt that the doctors were experimenting on her.” (p. 561). Thank you for your response!
