Social Care Reflection

When I came to Ohio State this summer, I began the program with the expectation that I would continue studying health disparities, in order to address examine health inequalities from standpoints of race, gender, sexual identity, and location. While I am still interested in those topics, throughout the semester my research interests have shifted, largely due to the work that I’ve been able to do with Dr. Cho as my temporary advisor this fall. At the beginning of the year, she had me read various theories surrounding illness narratives, including Frank’s The Wounded Storyteller (1998) and Hydén’s Illness and Narrative (1997), as well as some of her own work on narrative risk communication and perceived realism. (While I find Dr. Cho’s work …show more content…
As I went through Contemporary Communication Theories (DeAndrea) and Research Methods (Coronel), I was able to learn about political communication research that has informed my understanding of the communication climate we exist in today. As individuals self-select into social networks, and as information (or misinformation, as the case may be) is disseminated throughout, how is health and illness (topics that emotionally laden for many people) affected by this fragmented communication climate? For example, if on Facebook a post is shared describing a child’s health woes (attributed to vaccination), how is that factually inaccurate information supposed to be challenged? There is no easy way to refute another person’s lived experiences, and perhaps that is why inaccurate health information seems to be flourishing in a media environment when verified information is constantly at our …show more content…
As I progress through my research, I’d like to continue looking at how group identification, political beliefs, and other attitudes influence perceptions of health issues. For my thesis, I would like to focus on how attitudes toward government and corporations influence perceptions of vaccines, and (hopefully) how those attitudes influence how people seek and communicate health information. If I’m being real here, I’d also really like to pursue a PhD and continue researching health misinformation, as well as conspiracy theories. Following this election cycle it seems that in many social networks what some might consider to be conspiracy theories (and is perhaps even less verifiable than some existing theories) has been accepted as factual news. To my knowledge, very little research has been done on how people form perceptions of and evaluate those arguments, so I would like to continue exploring those

This class has been a great experience for me and the most important thing that I learned in class came from the young adulthood, middle adulthood, and late adulthood interviews. Linking the interviews with the person I interviewed with the theories related to that age had help me become aware of how I will use these theories in practicing social work in all areas. Now that I am aware of the theories I seek out the person I am working with the past history of their life from childhood to now. Each human experience is different and important to know when working with an individual. For example, in the middle adulthood interview, Shawn had a good relationship with his children that were very important to him.…

One the most significant things that I learned in introduction to human services this semester was that everyone experiences situations differently, what might be something unimportant and minor to you might be a trigger for someone else. You should always be mindful of others, I think us as human beings we tend to be a bit selfish and like to think that the world revolves around us. Which, is ridiculous because the world has 7.3 billion people and counting, and what makes me more significant than all those other people? Sometimes I’ll go out to the store in a hurry and I’ll get a line with a cashier that is being extremely slow, and I get upset and start thinking of some nasty things about the cashier, without ever taking into consideration what that person might be going through.…

When I started working as a CAN, as well as volunteering in the health care field, I understood that the work involved included helping residents in activities of daily living. What I found out after I started working was how much of an impact the job makes on people. When I was volunteering to help a woman go grocery shopping I did not think much of it. However, when I came into her home and started putting her groceries away she started tearing up. I found out that she and her husband used to always go grocery shopping together and would later play a game that involved putting the groceries away.…

Define Critical Reflection, including its theoretical foundations Within the field of social work, the professionals have to recognize and evaluate their own personal values, thoughts and beliefs. For this reason, critical reflection is a very important concept to be knowledgeable of within the social work profession. Abortion is commonly featured in the media, however they package abortion in such a way that they specifically avoid taking a direct stance on whether abortion is wrong or justified, meaning they shy away from being Pro-life or Pro-choice. However, indirectly condensing symbols are often used. For example, using terms such as anti-life rather than Pro-choice or anti-choice rather than Pro-life to describe different stances on abortion have a negative connotation and subliminally reveals the media host’s opinion on the matter. Another example includes when speaking about abortion using the term baby or infant versus using the term fetus.…

Throughout this semester we have discussed and practiced various techniques that can be used when working with clients. This semester at Loyola has enhanced my understanding of what it truly means to be a social worker, from the classroom perspective. In my field placement, I do not believe it is directly related to social work, but I was able to use a social worker perspective when interacting with the children in the program. This course was the only course that provided me with hands-on experience of engaging with different types of clients. In my other classes, we did not do case demonstrations instead, we discussed different theories and perspectives about individuals and family systems.…
