The rising discourse of a patient-centered approach to care has been widely adopted by the nursing and medical communities (RNAO, 2005). I discussed to my preceptor of Tanner’s, “Good clinical judgment requires a flexible and nuanced ability to recognize salient aspects of an undefined clinical situation, interpret their meanings, and respond appropriately” (Tanner, 2006, p. 205). We helped daughter to identify, prioritize, and initiate goals for her mother’s care, involving her in decision about her life and by being truthful to her mother. Through this actions, we could help the daughter to focus on what she want for her mother and facilitate the decision-making process (Gillick, 2009). Also we emphasis the need to have open communication with Mrs D. in order to be able to talk freely about comfort options as well as to promote trust and avoid deception: ‘If information is withheld from any member of a family, this can lead to a breakdown of ‘free’ and relaxed communication, which is essential when someone is terminally ill”(Enes & de Vries, 2004, p. 155).
The importance of acknowledging the patient as "central to the decision-making process" (Légaré et al., 2011, p. 557). We acknowledged daughter’s fears and supported her by remaining non-judgemental.
