Health care is my passion. I have a deep desire to help others achieve optimal health, which is why I am thrilled at the prospect of being enrolled in Marymount's Nursing program. I believe we are living in one of the most exciting times in medicine, as we have the privilege of witnessing amazing advancements in science such as the genetic sequencing of Human Genome Project and study of stem cells for regenerative medicine. These amazing advancements in modern science are coinciding with a renaissance of preventive health care. The increase in globalization has resulted in a blending of cultures, from allopathic medication to alternative medicines and, as a massage therapist, I have a special interest in the benefits provided by palliative care. I learned about the use of plant alkaloids in chemotherapy from a Biology of Cancer class I took in college. …show more content…
I have suffered from chronic low self esteem from a very young age and have lived with the adverse affects. Due to my low self esteem, I suffered from deep depression and feelings of worthlessness in college. This affected my grades, my health, and my family life. I have regrets about this time in my life and often wish I had done things differently. However, I think Civil Rights Activist Malcolm X summed it up best when he said, "There is no better than adversity. Every defeat, every heartbreak, every loss, contains its own seed, its own lesson on how to improve your performance next time." And my performance did begin to improve. Beginning in Fall 2010, my grades began to increase significantly and I made the transition for a B-C student to an A-B student. I have retaken courses that I completed at my university through Northern Virginia Community College and received higher marks. I have made the Dean’s List a couple of time for high marks at both the university I graduated from and the community college I attended for continuing
