Health Care Observation

San Bernardino, the city a grew up in is a very underserved community. The majority of students in the community receive free lunch at school, including myself during high school. By working as a scribe in the emergency rooms in San Bernardino, I have been able to observe just how underserved this community is. The majority of patients we see have manageable diseases that can easily be controlled with medication, however, they come in to the ER with complications from not being able to receive their medications. For instance, one patient was brought into the ER after a syncope episode without head trauma. Upon taking a history and a CT scan, we found he had a fatal subarachnoid hemorrhage secondary to uncontrolled hypertension. Many of my family members in Tennessee have many illnesses ranging from diabetes to atrial fibrillation and cancer, and as a result have to travel long distances to the nearest hospital quite often in order to keep their diseases controlled and their medications in stock. Some even come all the way to California to receive medical treatment. The need for physicians of all varieties is great in these rural and underserved communities, and as a result has lead me to the goal of becoming a physician in an underserved rural community so that I may help as many people as possible lead healthy lives, whether by using OMM to help them feel better, treating their diseases with medications or even holding their hands and listening to their concerns, because at the end of the day, the most important part of my day is making sure my future patients feel well and remain
