In today’s rapidly evolving society, literacy still poses a major quandary for American citizens across the nation. Health care educators provide written documents to teach patients. Thus, nurses must be cognizant of taking additional measures in aiding the illiterate patient when providing printed education materials (PEM). The reading material opposed to the literacy comprehension in patients demonstrated a significant gap in readability. As a result, strategies were devised to assist with health care literacy. According to Bastable (2014), one should constrain objectives to one or two key points to avoid a surplus of information, ensure content is age and culture appropriate, use large font, incorporate pictures, and bullet important elements.
As the diversity in America continues to grow, a myriad of instructional methods must be implemented to aid a patient in not only learning, but also retaining the information as well. Common instructional methods include the classic lecture, group discussion, one-to-one instruction, demonstration and return demonstration, gaming, simulation, role playing, role modeling, and self-instruction. A single or combination of these methods can be utilized to aid patients. These methods have advantages and disadvantages, so it is imperative to ensure proper selection accordingly to

The three chief elements of instructional materials include the delivery system, content, and presentation. Various manners of instructional materials include written, demonstration, and audiovisual. The most commonly used is the print material due to the numerous advantages. Demonstration materials encompass models, displays, posters, whiteboards, and bulletin boards.
