Involving the patient in every step of care, educating and then considering patient opinion, providing choices, and convincing the patient rather than instructing the patient are among some of the differences I experienced. I learned that serving and counseling the patient for all health needs, not just the chief complaint, is of utmost importance. Educating and promoting prevention, in my mind, is the most important tool I learned, as it improves the overall quality of life for the patient and is a cost effective mode of health care. I may have learned how to be a doctor in India, but my experience in the U.S. has taught me how to be an effective health care provider.
