Effective and ineffective communication can greatly affect a patient’s health care outcomes, treatment plans, medication regimens, and their daily lifestyles. Effective communication is necessary to ensure the delivery of safe and high quality care to the patients and their family members. Successful and effective communication between all health care professionals, patients, and their families are vital components for enhancing patient satisfaction, treatment compliance, and health care outcomes. “Patients who have an understanding of the dynamics of their disease and its treatment and also feel the service provider is involved regarding their well-being demonstrate higher satisfaction with the health care obtained tend to be more prone to adhere to treatment regimens” (Northouse & Northouse, 1998). The next objective we will discuss is how the lack of effective personal and professional healthcare communication contributes to poor health outcomes. We have already discussed how successful and effective communication can enhance patient satisfaction, treatment compliance, and healthcare outcomes, and how patients that are more informed of their care tend to be more prone to adhere to treatment regimens.
