Running is a very inexpensive form of exercise. All that it takes is time and effort. A person can run almost anywhere, a park, a trail, a track, a neighborhood or even on a treadmill. Running is an excellent exercise for the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It focuses on the leg muscles, toning and strengthening them. If a person is not sure how to start a running program, there are options for them. Couch to 5K is a program that gives a person a starting point and lets them build up to running a 5K or 3.1 miles in only 2 months. For a beginner, this program would assist in building a successful running program, because it is not intimidating and overwhelming for a novice runner. Running does not require any equipment, just a good pair of running shoes and comfortable clothing. Good shoes are important because wearing improper fitting shoes will cause damage to a person’s feet and possibly their body. Good shoes will have superior cushioning, flexibility, stability or motion control, breathability and traction for roads or trails. It is important to know what category a person’s feet fit into before purchasing shoes. Categories are defined by the foot’s arch. Whether the arch is high or low, the shoes need to fit properly for fewer injuries to happen.
