The community I have served is a large group of primary 1 to 6 children from two primary schools in Sichuan. In the first school, Yu Ying Primary School, most of the kids did not wear eyeglasses. In the second school, Diao Yuan Primary School, more students had their eyeglasses put on. The kids were energetic, obedient and healthy. However, since it was in a town instead of a flourishing city like Hong Kong, the quality of life, in terms of health care awareness, was lower. It seemed their personal hygiene needs improvement as it influences a person’s health including eye care and health. According to the data collected, we found that more than half of them had never gone for any eye examination though some have serious vision problems. All …show more content…
As a nurse-to-be, being caring is of paramount importance to patients. Therefore, apart from checking their visual health and getting them a right pair of glasses, I hope to bring them a sense of being cared and happiness. Also, this was a great opportunity for me to know more about the eye problems and the relationship between life styles and health status. According to our data, the major problems of the school learners were myopia, amblyopia, tropia, trichiasis and astigmatism while very few developed persistent pupillary membrane and corneal haze.
Ken and Patrick were my supervisors and they made my community service experience more valuable. They kindly taught me some screening skills that were not covered in lectures and patiently explained them with examples, making it easier for me to understand. Moreover, they provided me opportunities to try different tests and were always willing to assist me when I encountered technical problems. Sometimes I made mistakes, they would tolerate and forgive me, allowing me room to

For distant VA test, I was responsible for pointing the VA chart and SO students were for documentation. They had different habits on chart pointing but we had not gotten any consensus in the very beginning. Also, some spoke too softly that I could hardly hear their instructions that hinder the progress. Then, I took the initiative to let them know my difficulties and suggested some viable actions. Finally we came to a consensus so that the test became smoother. I learned that better communication can be helpful no matter the problem is small or large. First thing I want to share is that I don’t remember whether we used the term “health literacy” at work training in the hospital I worked before. But one thing I notice while doing the health literacy assessment tool is that the work training we had emphasized effective communication between patient-provider, exam patient’s understanding of health education by the teach-back method, and so forth. These are covered in the health literacy constructs. My colleagues and I always assess patients’ health literacy from conversations (I have never seen a questionnaire for health literacy before). I think we were doing well especially to the immigrant paid caregiver from Southeast Asian countries (those paid caregivers take care of the patient 24/7,…

Government functions to promote the well-being of its citizens; this includes promoting health care in a manner that will best promote the welfare of its citizens. Since health care is very regulated, it does not follow the laws that model a free-market economy. For this reason, instituting a health care system in a capitalist society causes unintended consequences that lead to injustice. Injustices stem from a commercial incentive for research and drug development, a vast consumer surplus, and limited access to care. The government is a reflection of the citizens they serve.…

When it comes to my present activity level, a lot has changed from the beginning of this class. I have to say that before this class I never made physical activity a priority in my day. I counted walking to class as a form of physical activity, which it was, but not enough. I am a lazy person and would rather be laying around watching Netflix than going to the gym.…
