Global health assistance should be coordinated with economic development strategies in the public sector, especially with education, and emphasize the development of a robust civil society. While increasing its policy consistency across government, the United States should expand beyond its tendency towards unilateral actions and engage more effectively with key multilateral technical organizations. Coordination with both bilateral and multilateral agencies will leverage America’s effectiveness, standing, and credibility as a world leader. The United States should increase education, research, and training infrastructure for global health and implementation science. Furthermore, training in health diplomacy should be included in global health curricula through multiple disciplinary fields, including international relations, public health military and defense, and economic development. This multidisciplinary approach will provide future health and foreign affairs professionals with an enhanced global health perspective and allow them to address global health as a pillar of foreign policy.
