A routine is very important for a baby or a child because it can be very useful in helping young people to adapt both physically and emotionally to a pattern that occurs regularly and suits both the child and the carer. A routine is a source of learning which is important as a child’s exploration is a play material. This can be by:

Routines around hygiene is very important for children, young people need to have their hands washed frequently because children pick up anything that catches their attention and may later put their hands into their mouths which can cause infection. Babies and toddlers like to put toys or items in their mouth that is a way for them to learn, this is why it is important for the setting to build a regular hand washing routine. When it comes to going to the toilet it does take time for children to learn the process, it is important not to rush the child especially when they are not ready, and there is no set age in which a child should start. The right time depends on each child's physical and emotional readiness. A nappy changing routine must be adapted regularly so that nappy rash cannot occur, children do need to have their nappies changed as soon as thy have soiled. It is important to have everything prepared such as baby wipes, clean nappy, a plastic covered padded changing mat and barrier cream. At sleep and rest time the routine can be either peaceful and comfortable or stress and turmoil for children. It is up to the child whether they want to sleep or not but the practitioner must ensure that the environment is peaceful and relaxed. Children often have trouble settling down at sleep and rest time because restful sleep is an act of trust. Children do not have the same dietary requirements, children may be vegetarians, or have allergies, lactose-intolerant, or who have other special religious or dietary needs. It' is essential to form a partnership with parents and talk to the families and find out which foods are appropriate and which are not, children should first wash their hand before eating this should be encouraged
