The topic that I will be discussing is the Head Start program. The Head Start program was developed by President Lyndon B. Johnson it was created to help low- income families. The article states that in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson declared a "War on Poverty."The Head Start program was basically a way to help struggling families with their daily living helping with healthcare, education and most of all child development. Neukrug (2017) defines a needs assessment as, “a process for determining and addressing needs or “gaps” between current conditions and desired conditions” (p.271). Since the Head Start program helps a variety of families I would try to find are we meeting their needs? Because every family is different and their needs may not be the same as another family they might require different resources. I would not apply the same methods to every family because I would have to consider their cultural backgrounds. This also brings up the issue of working with clients from diverse cultural/ racial groups it states Neukrug (2017) “Have the right attitudes and beliefs, gain knowledge, and learn skills. Be prepared to work with clients from varying cultural heritages by embracing the appropriate knowledge, skills, and beliefs prior to meeting with them”(p 235). This goes back to the needs assessment because I would want to know if my workers are treating each client with respect also are they gaining knowledge about the individuals cultural and are they implementing it with other of the same cultural background. Within the need assessment, I would create a survey questionnaire that is straightforward and to the point. For example, “what are some things that you has a parent would want to see improvement on with the Head Start program” and “ Does the Head Start program efficiently serve you well?
