Louis. As a family service worker, I work as an advocate for the family and child. I also help to start and complete the enrollment process for the family. We first have them do all necessary papers, including income, job verification, education, health needs and even create family goals. On our needs assessment sheet, a list with all basic needs such as, food, shelter, transportation, parenting, counseling, clothing, legal help and many more, this is where the enrolling parent checks off each other their needs and is provided with resources on how to get those needs met. The family service worker then follows them through the process, following up and assisting. In my personal experience, I have seen men and women come in and mark they need housing, education, transportation and job training. After giving the resources and assisting them, whether this meant driving them to the interview sitting with their child while they were interviewed or calling the housing department for them I’ve seen success. I’ve seen parents build up themselves with just a little bit of support and a helping hand be molded into citizens who are an attribute to their community and no longer needing social services. So as you can see the Head Start program may start with educating the child, but it is built to empower the entire family and break the cycle of poverty in our
