It develops and use tools and processes for gaining maximum efficiency, productivity and effectiveness. It involves developing mastery of skills like goals setting and planning the effective use of professional time for achieving desired results. TM simply makes better decisions about what to do & how to do it well to have a better performance. Nursing procedures may sometimes be forgotten or briefly conducted due to time shortage, and patients are often neglected & do not get adequate care. TM behaviors have important effects on quality-of-care. When nurses constantly work under time pressure it leads to burnout. As Nurses are the biggest part of the health care provider team they have significant influence on providing care services to adversely impact quality of given care. Thus setting realistic time frames for daily tasks, without allowing for procrastination, is an important skill. It can be frustrating to set too many goals for the day and then leave some unfinished. However from a TM perspective, it is better to err by having too many daily goals than to not have enough. Setting unrealistic goals every day can increase frustration and stress levels. Thus the nurse-leader should learn how long it realistically takes to accomplish tasks. (Hashemzadeh, 2011)
• In planning time, the nurse leader should ensure that she has adequate discretionary time. One of the most helpful techniques is to set aside a block of time for completion of routine non-priority, must-do paper work. How much time and when the time is set aside are determined by other organizational demands and by the energy-levels of the nurse leader. However at least 2 hours at any one time is recommended to be kept aside for discretionary time (Sarp N, 2005).
