The Truth of Leading by Example
“Lead by example!” my mother would say. “Your sister always watches you and tries to copy you. You must be the example for her of how to behave.” I have always been told that setting good examples is an important trait for leaders, and a group of people will go in different directions if they don’t have an example to follow. Leaders, on the other hand, bring people together to form a team and create a cooperative and happy work environment. And the best leaders lead by example. Sadly, in most companies you will find many managers but very few leaders. It is evident that leading by example is the best way to lead. But what kind of examples should you set? If you make a mistake, take the blame. Accept responsibility for your actions; do not throw other people under the bus. Trust others; be willing to rely on them and give the benefit of the doubt. Be productive in your work and get things done in a timely manner. Others will notice these examples and want to do the same. Many people in my life have led me by their examples. My parents show me how to be selfless by putting my sister and me first. My sister is compassionate and friendly, which I try to emulate. My boyfriend Dakota shows me how to live as a passionate and faithful Christian. I admire my best friend Maggie’s love of learning and impeccable manners. My teachers are an example of dedication when they go above and beyond to help a student. The list goes on and on. I don’t know what I’d do without all these people guiding

Generally, managers focus on organizing and allocating resources to move towards an organizational goal. Although some activities might fall into both categories, leadership and management are different in many ways. Leaders focus on bigger picture than managers; for example, leaders look for ways to change an industry or global picture, while managers look at the ways to improve an organization’s goals.…

210). We as humans feel the need to copy what others are doing; “we have this subconscious feeling that if we aren’t doing what everybody else is doing, then we are probably going to die” (2005, p. 212). So with this in mind, it is no shock that leading by example is a popular style of leadership. A leader knows that their subordinates are watching them; a good leader will be mindful of this and perform exactly or above standards on how a procedure should be done. They will demonstrate valuable qualities on how to treat and speak to others.…

Though I have just defined two roles, manager and leader, they are not necessarily separate. These roles can be combined. A manager, supervisor or boss can be a good leader and vice versa. Though it may be easier to become a leader in a managerial role than a manager in a leadership role. While some argue that leadership is an innate quality one is born with, author Paul Bambrick-Santoyo makes the argument that leadership can be taught with time, quality coaching and support (Bambrick-Santoyo,…

Players look up to staff members and respect them because they set a good example and are staff. I love being a leader and setting a good example for players and other staff members because I like the feeling of doing good and this is just one of the things I’m naturally good…

If one ranks leaders on how well they led by example, surely one of our greatest leaders is none less than the 26th U.S. president, Theodore Roosevelt. “Do as I say, not as I do” is a philosophy that many leaders take, however, this builds bitter resentment in the eyes of the people. The best leaders have always been ones who lead by example, showing their followers how its done, both speaking of ideals and showing them. Theodore Roosevelt led by example by working against big businesses that oppressed consumers, working for the betterment of himself, and fighting for what he believed in.…
