There is one sexually transmitted disease that everyone is afraid of and that is HIV or AIDS. It has been plaguing this country for years and other parts of the world for even longer. Scientist believes that the HIV virus came from a chimpanzee from Western Africa. They think the virus most likely jumped to humans when humans hunted these chimpanzees for meat and came into contacted with their infected blood (What is HIV / AIDS?, 2012) . After years the virus spread and infected multiple parts of African and then spread to other parts of the world.

Do to the fact that HIV can be contracted in so many ways it is important for healthcare workers to be cautious and careful around HIV patients or anytime they are handling any bodily fluids. It is important to always wear gloves and report any needle sticks immediately (How to avoid getting or transmitting HIV, 2007).
The standard way to treat HIV patients is by prescribing them antiretroviral therapy (ART) medications which are the recommended treatment for HIV infected people. ART involves taking a combination of three or more anti-HIV medications daily. ART prevents HIV from multiplying and destroying infection-fighting CD4 cells. This helps the body fight off life threatening infections and cancer. Although anti-HIV medications cannot cure HIV, people with HIV are enjoying healthy lives and living longer because of these medications (HIV/AIDS, 2012). Additionally the anti-HIV medications stop HIV from advancing to AIDS. To be diagnosed with AIDS a person infected with HIV must either have a CD4 cell count less than 200 cells/mm^3 or an AIDS-defining condition that is serious and life threatening (HIV/AIDS, 2012). People around the world have been known to use alternative medicines and therapies to help treat HIV. Some of the treatments include acupuncture and the use of herbal medications but it is hard to know if these techniques truly work.
