It was the first day of the long 180 days of prison known as Hazlet Middle School. I walked in and the smell of body odor and fresh paint slap me like a brick wall. I knew the swirling tornado of teachers and tests has begun. Everyone was still filled with the joy of Summer like a bucket filled with sand. The school was shimmering as bright as a diamond. This is the one day a year where the school actually looks like it was cleaned. The rest of the year you can feel the germs surrounding you like a tsunami ready to hit. In the article “The Little High School That Could: Teacher Urges Latinos into College-- and is Not Rehired.” Beverly Beyette discusses the controversy ; that surrounded George Shirley at Alisal High in Salinas, California. Shirley was an English and History teacher at Alisal High in 1986, and he is well remembered as the teacher who pushed Latino students into some of the most prestigious universities in the country including some Ivy League universities. This story swept the whole country by storm because Shirley did the unthinkable and got 72 of 84 students into great schools but was later terminated from his position at Alisal High and was not rehired, and this caused many problems because some believed Shirley was an unfit teacher for writing some of his student’s college essays others will argue and say he was a great teacher. I agree with those ; hence, who think Shirley was a great teacher because he actually did something for his student…

The eyes of the parents directed straight towards me, as if I was a threat to their well-being. With the feeling of fear I looked down at the floor and briskly walked to the line to be introduced to my teachers. My hands were shaking and my heart galloping at mach 5. Suddenly the floor became a wall with me on top. I slowly looked up to see a man with a mahogany beard, smiling at me with a sense of accomplishment.…

I can recall the days of arriving at school just as the bell rung. Morning prayers started at 8:05 on the dot every day. A loud screech-voiced over the P.A system welcoming students to a brand new day of high school. I would always hurry to the back of class not trying to grab the attention of my teachers. But they would always single me out and tell me to go grab a pass.…

Around halfway through the year, classes became unbearable with the constant, dehumanizing schoolwork. Every assignment tugged and cracked any remaining portion of uniqueness I had left. I felt that the curriculum was intentionally designed to ready us to be a factory worked with a company ID instead of a name, just like the A.T. PERSONAS forced down our throats. Since he subjected me to infernal besiegement on a daily basis, I thought I should pull a prank on my homeroom officer. Every day he would use his superfluous title as ‘officer’ to subject us to his whims, just to inflate his pompous ego.…

My mom always used to tell me that I should rule a small country one day, and I would look at her and say, “What? You don’t think I can handle the world?”.…
