Hazel has always won the 100-yard-dash in the field day event. Suddenly, a girl named Gretchen joins the race and becomes a tough competitor to Hazel. Therefore, the conflict is person versus person because two athletes are challenged to win first place in the race. Another conflict could also be person versus society; expectations of Hazel winning the race are high since she’s been winning for a lot of years. All of these conflicts are external because the story ended with Hazel winning. What if Hazel hadn’t motivated herself to win the 100-yard-dash because she had a tough competitor? The conflict there would’ve become internal where she’d be depressed thinking she isn’t capable of beating Gretchen.
