Early in the morning, and the District was already busy. Usually, around this time was when all the miners would be making their way to the mines for another day of work. But today, it was a different kind of activity that made the District seem both eerie and festive all at once. Sure, it wasn't a fun festive feeling, it was more of a depressing one-- you know, like the get togethers that people have after someone dies and they act like they are enjoying talking about memories and future plans? The heavy, overwhelming feeling that went along with that was just how this day felt every year.

I think that the Hunger Games and the myth of Theseus is similar because in both stories people were being sent as entertainment and to be killed. In the myth of Theseus, Theseus asked why people were being sent off so his dad told him and Theseus didn’t like it so he went as sacrifice one year and he killed the minotaur. In the Hunger Games, Katniss was out hunting on the day of the reaping and she came home and her little sister asked her why they did the reaping and Katniss said it was for entertainment. In the myth of Theseus, on the day of the reaping he volunteered for another young boy and he took his place just like in the Hunger Games Katniss volunteered for her little sister.…

The inspiration for Suzanne Collin’s novel, The Hunger Games, came from channel surfing between reality shows where young kids were competing against each other to young kids fighting each other in a real war. The shows began to blur together in Collin’s mind and soon the story of Katniss began to develop (Interview). Katniss is a sixteen-year-old girl living in district 12, a coal-mining district, who winds up fighting in the Hunger Games after volunteering to take her twelve year old sister’s place. The novel takes place in a futuristic world after an apocalypse has flooded most of the landmass leaving behind a newly reshaped American continent now named Panem.…
