Simonson Barton’s diary entry “Haymarket Riot” provided a detailed description about his experience of the tragic event that occurred in Chicago. Simonson arrived at the Haymarket for a meeting and met with speakers like Spies, a rally leader, and Fielden. The meeting rally was about the legislation denied in favor of the working men.When Simonson saw the lighted fuse, he wondered what it was. Then, an explosion occurred right along with the police shooting into the crowd.

The diary entry “Pearl Harbor News Reaches FDR” provided a detailed description about Tully’s (Roosevelt’s secretary) experience of the bombing of Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. Louise Hackmeister called Tully and immediately told her the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor. Tully immediately rushed to the White House. News of the attack was quickly reaching the White House from Admiral Stark. Tully’s duty was to shorthand each message that she received and pass it on.
