The era of Dark Romanticism, a vile literature style in the 18th and 19th centuries, broke apart the Light Romantic Movement, which heavily incorporated the idea of the common man. This new writing style focused on unique anecdotal experiences with a much darker tone. Two authors at the time, Edgar Allen Poe and Nathaniel Hawthorne, became increasingly fond with this new writing style, and began incorporating it into their own works. Although both writers included similar tones, philosophies, and conflicts, their work was noticeably different. Hawthorne’s works pinpointed issues with the established society, while Poe’s works analyzed the psychological states of mind of his characters as a result of their experience.
