One of the paramount impacts in Hawaiian history was the Great Mahele of 1848. The Mahele was a land division that was legislated by King Kamehameha III. The Mahele’s purpose was to supply Hawaiians with additional land. Moreover, the Mahele was to halt the foreigners from procuring control over Hawaii. Nevertheless, the foreigners ended up with the preponderance of the land (Cachola).…
The annexation of Hawaii by the United States was a great idea by Congress and President McKinley. It was an area that was ideal for sugar growing and it was a place for the U.S. to be able to have more control of the Pacific Ocean. With the annexation of Hawaii, many opportunities opened up for the United States.…
“When Kamehameha died in 1819, his son Liholiho (Kamehameha II) inherited the throne. Kamehameha's favorite wife, Ka'ahumanu, actually wielded more power, however, and effectively ran the government” (Sovereignty, Sin, and Salvation). Ka'ahumanu wanted to destroy the kapu system but Liholiho and the chiefs didn’t approve of it. A battle occurred and Ka'ahumanu won. When the missionaries from England arrived in the island, they wanted to convert the Hawaiians into Christians.…
Kamehameha was a great leader because, he was the first Hawaiian to unify all 8 Hawaiian Islands. As Kalani’opu’u’s nephew he wa as well trained not by Kalani’opu’u, but by Kekuhaupi’o(1). In the year of 1861, in the midst of America’s Civil War, Congress authorized one of the most ambitious projects that the country had ever envisioned: the construction of a transcontinental railroad. At one end of this immensely long railroad system which was planned to be over 1,700 miles long __ was the Central Pacific Railroad which stretched across the lands of California, the harsh granite walls of the Sierra Nevada and onwards to connect with the Union Pacific in Utah. Through my research of many historical articles by reputable sources I have found that even though the Central Pacific was built by a many different ethnicities the primary source that had the biggest impact on the advancement of the railroad system came from a group of…
"All war is deception," (Sun Tzu). World War II deceived President Roosevelt and the american people into thinking that all Japanese-Americans citizens are spies which made them fear betrayal. For this reason, Roosevelt ordered the Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, which issued the internment of Japanese-American citizens. The Americans subjected all of them to internment camps. Families were investigated, tried, and separated.…
Stephen Caputo 5/6/16 Period 3 Annexation of Hawaii Annexing the Islands The annexation of Hawaii, some were for it and some were against it. The many benefits of the annexation of Hawaii also came with plenty of awful downfalls. Sugar was beginning to take up root in Hawaii. It would inevitably change the face and fate of the Sandwich Isles, causing foreigners to invest in the industry exponentially. But it is not sugar that is as essential in holding Hawaii for now. It would be land. Land, in foreign eyes, was a pivotal element of maintaining influence there, and they needed more of it.…
"Have humility and integrity and with your perseverance, the world can be yours. "-Clarence T. C. Ching. This quote made me want to make Hawaii a better place by being humble and determined to make differences. Over the past two years I have been inspired by so many people who change the world.…
As a native Hawaiian, I have a negative association with the idea of “politics” because of the distress that the American federal and state government has caused for my people. The federal government ensures that native Hawaiians have limited autonomy and are completely subordinated to its jurisdiction. The state government is comprised of elected officials who are of other ethnic backgrounds and do not support native Hawaiian values or opinions. Under the United States government system, my people constantly struggle for these elected officials to acknowledge their opinions and for the rights to lands that our ancestors have cultivated for centuries. Although educated native Hawaiian advocates have led our people to some progress, there are…
Annexation of Hawaii and the Last Monarch Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch of the Hawaiian Islands, had to make many difficult decisions during her reign to try to preserve the Hawaiian way of life for the native people. An elite class of American businessmen and landowners had a different idea and were involved in getting a new constitution instituted which removed much of the monarch’s power. Queen Liliuokalani had been born to high ranking chiefs. When she was born she was adopted by Abner Paki and Laura Konai, the granddaughter of King Kamehameha I. She had attended royal school and was fluent in the English language.…
At first glance, European imperialism and thus colonialism seems ridden with atrocity and demise for those upon whom it is imposed while serving the pride and prejudice of those who have imposed it. The question that this paper seeks to answer, however, is one that is layered and cannot be superficially analyzed based on popular views and discourse. For the findings of this paper to prove academically valuable and sound, one must aim to consider with as little (if any at all) bias as possible. Therein lies credibility.…
