The ancient Greek people explained everyday things with gods, they had gods for love to whether your bread burned. The Greeks believed that the gods created Greece, that gods lived on Mt. Olympus, and that the city’s fought over which god would represent their city state. The Greeks believed that their gods created the entire Earth, “... made one country after another with good soil that sifted through, and threw away the stones left in the strainer.” (Document 1) according to the Greek legend these rocks became Greece. The Greeks explained everything that they didn’t know and then some.…
For example, one myth told by the Mayans in their sacred book, the Popol Vuh, tells about the creation of mankind through their God’s many attempts at creating the human that best fit their needs. The story tells how mankind was first made from mud, but this didn’t work because man could hardly see, hear or walk and were soon washed away. The Mayan gods then made other beings out of wood and these beings were successful for operating but they lacked blood and souls, so they were destroyed. Finally, after much discussion and deliberation, the gods decided to take advantage of the ingredients they had and they added maize to the mixture and made the third generation of humans out of white and yellow ears of maize. The Mayans believed that they descended from this third generation of men and that their wives were created shortly…
The Hindu creation story is more about the Gods creating the universe by sacrificing Purusha an ancient being that holds within him the cosmos, while Hawaiian creation folklore tells more of an event which created the universe, not really a person. These myths are supposed to explain that which is unknown as in the ancient world one did not have much time to think about the creation of the universe when the whole tribe is starving. These myths serve a different purpose as well, as we can see through history the Gods or God are used to justify actions taken by the followers. For example, the infamous Ku Klux Klan or KKK believed that their work was representative of that of God himself. Moreover, groups such as Hamas and the infamous ISIL and ISIS in the middle east justify their atrocities using divine destiny to convince other of their cause.…
Ancient Greece can be traced back to the Stone Age hunters (6000-2900 B.C.); however, Greek culture was much more notable from 1100-146 B.C., and likely had a more profound impact on Western civilization than any other culture. From 1100-750 B.C., a period known as the Dark Ages, Ancient Greece was immersed with wars and invasions and, over time, was divided into small, city states. During the Archaic Period (750-500 B.C.), art, the beginnings of democracy, and the knowledge and understanding of the written language started to re-emerge. The Greeks fought the Persians during the Classical Period (500-336 B.C.) and Athens reached its greatest political and cultural heights, including full development of a democratic plan of government (Document…
After reading the creation myths of both the Inuits and the Mayans and also reading elegant yet simple Puritan poetry in the works “Huswifery” by Edward Taylor and “To My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet. I’ve discovered many differences of the two types of texts. The creation myths featured somewhat mythical creatures and vivid storytelling while the Puritan poets stuck to a more plain writing style by eliminating any words that would cause imagery as to abide by the basic lifestyle they lived. I noticed throughout these texts that all of these very different cultures had one thing in common: a higher being, a religious figure(s). In the Mayan creation myth, the higher beings were two gods, Tepeu, who was the maker, and Gucumatz,…
Thomas Impoco Ms Raker Period 2 19 May 2017 Pallas: Titan god of warfare and warcraft The Greeks believed that every natural phenomenon in the world occurred because of gods - humanoid creatures that are on a higher plane of existence. They used the idea of gods because science back then couldn't explain the natural phenomena happening around them. The belief of the existence of gods had it's own history, which was very complex and in depth. One big part of the history was the Titans.…
A myth is a story that holds some kind of significance in a culture, a story that addresses fundamental and difficult questions that we as human beings ask: who or what am I, where did I come from, why am I here, how should I live, what is the right thing to do, what is the universe, how did it all begin? Myths are stories that are told about great men and great women; about the forces of good and evil; about large and small animals; about natural thing as well creatures like giants, gods and other supernatural beings. The complete study of all these stories theire respective elements is called mythology. Now when people hear the term mythology they automatically think of the Greek version, more specifically their gods such as Zeus the top-god,…
The myths that I choose to compare and contrast their major elements are the Ute Creation Myth and the Hawaiian Creation Myth. These two myths are similar but they possess some differences as well. In the creation in the Ute Myth there was a spirit in the sky named “Manitou” alone in the heavens with the clouds, sky, and sun. However, in the beginning of the Hawaiian Myth there was only darkness, from there the night was born as a male creature, meanwhile the female one was the essences of the darkness itself. But, both tales the way that things came into the world have a similar order, the creation stared with plants which surrounded the earth, the fishes, birds, and lastly animals.…

Greek and Roman Mythology are filled with multiple interpretations of how the creator, whether it is the gods themselves or nature, gave our world its shape and form. These stories draw the background to the base of the gods and goddesses who govern much of classical mythology. Ovid’s Metamorphoses and Hesiod’s Theogony are two pieces of work that account r how our universe came to be. There are clear distinctions and similarities between how these authors portrayed their deities and their role in the universe.…
The most common theme throughout myths are all the challenges that gods and goddesses faced. Throughout their lives gods and goddesses came across problems, which either help them become the god/goddess they were, or it allowed them to help others. The first clear example of this was Zeus. The whole problem started because Zeus wanted to overthrow his father and save his brother and sisters from the inside of his father Cronus, where they were capture. So both of them went to war against each other, and they both had allies.…
The Naïve American creation myth is less complex. There is one main god or spirit who is usually refereed as the Great Spirit. The Great Spirit is the being who is responsible for creating the universe and the earth. The secondary gods are personifications of natural elements (). So, the Great Spirit did not necessarily take the time to create the other gods one by one they just manifested from nature itself.…
Native American’s idoled the God’s nature and the Greek’s created numerous God’s that explained all events that could occur. All cultures had their own type of myths, which all held some truth and held even more missing pieces that were filled in by mankind's words, creating myths. One other similarity I have found in that most cultures believe in an life after death. I don’t know that I have it in me to consider this a myth, as I do believe in it, however since it has never been proven true I can see that this could be considered mythical. One last similarity I have found is that many cultures symbolized animals.…
The ancient Roman Empire is regarded as one of the most powerful, influential civilizations of all time. Although flourishing in ancient history, people still view Rome as one of the greatest empires in the world. Religion was an important part of Roman culture, but they formed their ideas of religion and mythology based on Greek religious practices which preceded the Roman Era.…
