Neomonachus schauinslandi, also known as the Hawaiian monk seal, it is an endangered species found throughout the Hawaiian Islands. This is the oldest species of seals on the planet characterized by a gray color body but turns brown when weathering. They have a life cycle of 25-30 years with the female giving birth to usually only one pup. The skin of the Hawaiian monk seal has unique attributes that allow it to shed the top layer of their skin and fur called “catastrophic molt”. The skin is also reputed for heat tolerance. The flippers of the monk seal allow it to swim, glide, and dive up to 500 meters for as long as 20 minutes underwater to hunt and catch prey.
