Today, however, most of the meth imported into the state comes from California and Mexico through drug cartel operations. (Hawaii Threat, Para 15) The drug is also produced locally on a small scale. Users normally prefer the pure smokable form which is dubbed “ice”. This form is the easiest and fastest to ingest. Compared to the rest of the United States, Hawaii’s meth problem is quite possibly the largest in the country. Meth seizures by police are twice as high as marijuana, cocaine and heroin combined. (Hawaii Threat, Para 12) Hawaii is number two in meth related medical cases treated in America. Workers in the state are also four times more likely to test positive for meth. Hawaii ranks as number one in the nation for workplace meth use. (Hawaii Meth, Para 2) The prevalent reason for workplace use of meth is that it provides a stimulation that allows a worker to be focused and alert. Many people work mind-numbing, tedious jobs. (Meth, Para 10) Meth addicts are known to lose their teeth at a rapid rate due to a variety of causes such as prolonged poor oral hygiene and meth induced decay. Meth is known to cause psychological effects mainly heightened awareness, insomnia and restlessness. Meth use over time has been associated with anxiety, depression, violent and even suicidal behaviors. The highly addictive nature of meth causes users to quickly develop a dependence. Withdrawal or cutoff from the substance causes a crash which can lead to the user being fatigued and lethargic for extended amounts of time. The crash from meth withdrawal is even more severe than cocaine related
