When pressure builds up molten rock, hot gas and rock fragments erupt out the top. When a volcano erupts the devastation is only rivaled by only some of the worst natural disasters. Rock fragments can shoot up to 100s of meters into the air permanently damaging structures, while unstoppable lava flows plows through farmlands and towns destroying everything in their path and poisonous gases can reach other sides of the globe causing blackouts the size of cities and leaving the land unusable for decades. Volcanoes are usually classes into three categories of activity, active, which is when the volcano is currently erupting. Dormant which is when the volcano isn't erupting currently but is predicted to erupt soon and an extinct volcano is when the volcano hasn't erupted in the last 10,000 years. Volcanoes come in all shapes and sizes but there are three main shapes that they can be categorized into, the Shield, Cinder Cones & Composite Cones. The tallest volcano in the world is Ojos del Salado which stands at 6893 meters located in the Andes

Sometimes the pressure can build up forming a crater, miles in diameter. The higher the silica content the more viscous or thick the lava. Rhyolite calderas produce the most violent eruptions of any type of volcano on earth. This is evident in the mountain area of St. Francois with the rhyolite and igneous rock layers.…
