“Meaningless broken promises from Mufi, Peter and Mayor Kirk Caldwell”, a quote used by a blogger about the development of the rail transit in Hawaii. With the announcement of Rail starting in Hawaii, many local residents had mixed reviews about the development and how it will affect society. Many residents are against the development of rail because of the cost, traffic, and uncertainties that don’t help assure the people that the rail was necessary to build at this time. As a resident of Hawaii myself, I’m not in support of the rail because of the many negatives then positives being presented.

The reason why many local residents don’t support rail is because of the funding and where the government is getting the money to pay for the project. In an article it says, “3.7 Billion of tax payer money collected from Residents, Businesses, and visitors (Honolulu, 5).” The development of rail is being paid by taxpayer money, which are taxes taken out of people’s paychecks. If you really think about it, every person in the state is paying for rail even if they’re not going to use it even once. In a news article it says, “Rail project could wind up costing taxpayers 10 to 15 percent more than budgeted. A 15 percent increase would raise the project's total cost to more than $6 billion (Honolulu, 7).” With the news of budget increase many residents are left in disappointment with an increase in tax after being set on a budget to start the rail in the beginning. The increase budget also affects the Hawaii’s Bus system to saying, “Diverting more than $200 million in federal dollars normally used for the city's bus system (Honolulu, 4).” The increase budget was taken from other part of funding. Cutting bus systems funding affects the efficiency of Hawaii’s main transportation and could affect the quality of its buses in a long run. Many residents are unsure about the promises being made about the cost from all taxpayer money. People have found that, …show more content…
The Island of Oahu before the rail was one of the top three places in the nation with the worst traffic to be recorded. With the continuing road closure, many resident have to adapt to many modified travel times and bus schedules to add an inconvenience. The primary focus of the rail was to provide a fast way to transport people through the island and to provide an alternative to driving a car. Many spectator don’t agree with idea that rail will relief traffic saying, “Population growth is one of the many inevitable causes of increased traffic that the rail will not be able to fix because the rail cannot control the rate at which the population grows (Alternative, 6).” This quote is saying that even though the rail is built the growing amount of Hawaii’s population will not affect the traffic. The use of rail will not help everyone because it only supports one side of the island and cannot accompany a lot of people taking the rail. Following up on the road closure traffic has been increase by another hour to travelers and most of the construction happens in the busiest roads on the island like Ala Moana
