Have You Lived Your Whole Life Without Seeing A Single Mice Or Rat

Have you lived your whole life without seeing a single mouse or rat? Are you someone who feels that none of this concerns you? For anybody living in New York, these rodents are a major problem. Although they are believed to be only found in subway stations and sewers, you might find one sitting five feet away your couch, sharing your popcorn and excreting waste to show its thanks. Sounds disgusting and absurd? Well, that’s reality!

Why did I choose to research this?
I started to research this topic because last year, my house was infested with mice. Every day, I would come home and go into my room to hear scratching sounds from inside the walls. While enduring the freeloading nuisances, I tried to figure out how these mice got inside the house but couldn’t. I was able to catch some of them, by laying mouse traps wherever I found droppings but wasn’t able to exterminate them completely. The same week that I suffered from the mice, my friend from across the street finds a huge rat in his basement. I wanted to know if there was a connection or common cause for us having to deal with these pests and the cause behind the rodents

He goes over the facts that, “rats are nocturnal,” “their eyes are small, black, and shiny,” “to make up for their poor eyesight they have an excellent sense of smell,” and “they have strong feet.” (Sullivan 6) He also mentions that, “rats can taste the tiniest amounts of poison,” “can run and climb with squirrel-like agility,” “are excellent swimmers surviving in rivers and bays, in sewer streams and toilet bowls,” and “love to dig.”(8) From his description of rats, I feel that I can understand why a house infected by these pests would have headaches all day. Can you imagine what it would be like, having these creatures running around your house every night? They’re hard to drown, hard to poison, can climb tables, and dig holes

They also have very strong jaws made for chewing meat of the prey.…

Dear Aunt Bessie, I thought about your request and found about the many problems in our country. Meat is never cleaned, children are forced to work in factories, often losing entire limbs, and probably over half the populations do not have equal rights. Following your request, I have decided to give away the million dollars as you told me, Six hundred thousand to the one that needs it most, three hundred thousand to the next, and one hundred thousand to the last. After a little bit of thinking, I decided the meat packing industry needed it the most.…

The plague epidemics of the 6th, 14th, and 17th century are commonly known as Justinian’s Plague, the Black Death, and the Plague of 1665, respectively. Yersinia pestis was the major source of the plague in all three epidemics. Modern DNA analysis studies showed that Y. pestis has a strong correlation with victims of the Black Death in the 14th century. However, although these modern studies show biologically that Yersinia pestis was the cause of the Black Death, many scientists are skeptical and believe that the disease may have been typhus (Nutton). Another study shows a link between Justinian’s Plague and the Black Death (Nutton).…

The black rats like to live close to humans because of how much food and shelter they get from humans, the only quality which make them incredibly dangerous to beings. Although, the majority think that the rats bring this disease, they don’t. The fleas on the rats were the ones that first infect the rats with the bacterium Yersinia Pestis. The bacterium circulates among areas where rodents live in great numbers known as “plague focus” or “plague reservoir” (Gale). Before finding new human hosts for the fleas to infect, they take ten to fourteen days to kill off and contaminate most of the rat colony.…

The book that my group decided to read was Rat Island: Predators in Paradise and the World's Greatest Wildlife Rescue by William Stolzenburg. This book chronicles the invasive pests like rats, weasels, stoats, ferrets, and cats invading small islands and decimating the natural plant and fauna. The main focus of this book is the invasion of New Zealand by rats and how they threatened the existence of the native flightless parrot, the kakapo. This book examines the causes and effects of the invasive species brought to remote islands by humans and how we can fix them. The fauna of these remote islands get feasted on because they have not adapted to such vicious, relentless predators.…

In Metaphorical Ways of Knowing, Sharon L. Pugh, Jean Wolph Hicks, and Marcia Davis emphasize how metaphors have the ability to raise hidden or subtle commonalities seen in everyday life (18). Although I agree with what Pugh, Hicks, and Davis wrote, metaphors involving animals and humans still bring about a negative connotation once compared, and through these comparisons, another pattern appeared where an animal’s normal behavior can be seen in humans’ action. Pugh, Hicks, and Davis as authors of “Metaphorical Ways of Knowing” elaborate on the subtle commonalities. In the “Hunger Games,” there’s a scene where countless camera man flocks to the scene to observe the killing game.…
