Sports and School? Which one weighs the other one more? Many people would say it’s not even close school and academic is so much better for a kid than participating in a sport in high school. In the article “Have Sports Teams Brought Down America’s School?” Elizabeth Kolbert is urging for schools to out sports, so there will be no distraction when it comes to academic learning. Well, I am hear to tell you that we should not completely eliminate sports in high school because of three main things life lessons, childhood obesity, and creating goals to achieve.
The article “Have Sports Teams Brought Down America’s School?” is about two different school with two different test scores. Those to schools are Wroclaw, Poland and Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Wroclaw, Poland beats Gettysburg, Pennsylvania test scores by a landslide. The main difference the two schools have that could possibly make such a difference is test scores is Wroclaw, Poland does not have any sports teams at all. The kids view of this is that it is terrible because they love sports “the practices, which are held rain or shine; the games, from which they sometimes do not return until nine o’clock at night; the sweaty socks and the cleats and the jerseys.” The adults on the other hand more or less agree with this because they don’t want to leave education policy to a 14 year old. My first reason why sports should not be completely out of school is because there are life lessons that schools can’t teach kids. When competing in sports you learn the value of teamwork, responsibility, courage, determination and many more lessons. According to “Huffpost parents” it states “she has spent countless hours at the ice rink trying to master a skill that may look very insignificant on its own but is actually the base for a much harder complex skill.” This is an example of how sports teaches you determination because now she will carry that determination on in the future such as when she is searching for a career. Next, I would like to mention childhood obesity. …show more content…
This is a major factor in why I believe sports should not be taken out of schools. America is known for people being obese and the reason is because of laziness. “Forty-six episodes at a commercial-free 47 minutes each — about the length of a psychiatric session — adds up to 36 hours, almost a whole work week.” Proclaimed James Atlas the author of “Get a Life.” This is an example of kids being lazy non active it’s called binge-watching. It’s where you watch countless hours of tv shows. That is where sports help kids to live a healthy lifestyle because they are going to practice and have to do workouts in order for them to get better resulting in them being at a healthy weight. This is very important especially in their future because if they learn to live a sedentary lifestyle than when they get older they will have all kinds of health problems. My last reason is just important as the other because it creates kids to strive to be the best at what they are. It’s creating goals and be willing to sacrifice certain things in order to achieve them. This is very important in life because it teaches you determination, discipline, and sacrifice. These three things are very important when you land your first job for example or
