According to Avery Gordon, haunting is a method of sociological research that the theorist describes and analyses in her book Ghostly Matters. Gordon explains haunting as following: “Haunting is a constituent element of modern social life It is neither pre-modern superstition nor individual psychosis; it is generalizable social phenomenon of great import” (Gordon, 2008, p.7) Haunting can be defined as phenomenon that reveals how the past is in the present. Gordon considers the aspect of haunting very important because it is believed to be part of our social world, and understanding of it is essential for grasping the nature of our society and for changing it.
