The Belvedere is one hundred And twenty four years old. it was built by a steam boat manager J.russell jones in 1858. In 1883 he was forced into bankruptcy And the mansion was sold to John Ross In 1938. The house was leased to a city site for a museum.
the Belvedere is also known as the model house because of its beauty and its 22 rooms. Also just a little structure has been changed on the inside so the building does not fall apart or collapse. The main rooms and the guest rooms have all been restored back to the 1850s. With all sorts of really nice authentic furniture and lots of nice accessories of that time period. They have six overnight guest rooms that are on the second and third floors. There are also few modern things added to each room like a proper toilet, bath and phones. Guests can also step out onto a small roof garden in which they fixed recently. In which, they have a great view of the historic galena river and surrounding galena hills. Georgie Geyer, a writer for the Chicago daily news once told about spending a haunted night In the Belvedere. She said that she carefully locked in “housewifely manner”. Only to later see them flapping open, letting in the cold wind. She was assured by the house staff that no one living had been near her room.Their is a boy who name is Lester he was the youngest son of the early owners of the building he died in that room, It says that Lester somehow found his way to the third floor where they had an ornate hand-carved coffin was being stored. At the time and he locked the door because he knew he wasn't supposed to be in there, and he climbed into the coffin and it slammed shut and he was suffocated. So Lester doesn't want anyone to die like he did so he went around and unlocked every door that is locked. and in the new owner Joseph seller paid for a cleansing and rid the house of
