In the months following the arrival of the first settlers in Illinois, church members, under the direction of Joseph Smith who had recently been released from his Missouri jail cell, reclaimed land, created a university, wrote a city charter, mounted a militia, and constructed a temple for the place Mormon Saints quickly named Nauvoo, the Hebrew word for “city beautiful” (“Nauvoo: City Beautiful,” 1).
