As Halloween approaches, we are all indulging in our love of all things spooky. Ghosts, spirits, monsters, and—this year particularly—clowns have all been filling our minds lately. For our third dispatch, I was looking for something different to the Art Institute or the Shedd Aquarium. The idea of looking at haunted hotels first appealed to me because of the location of them. The Congress is what I stare at while I sleep. If something grotesque happened that close to where I lived, of course I would be curious to know more. My two friends, both named Morgan, their friend Emily, and I set out on Monday to visit the two mysterious places. Holmes, to find young women to work for him at his hotel. He would later brutally murder them in his torture castle near by. Legendary Chicago gangster, Al Capone, also frequently took up residence on the eighth floor of the north tower. Allegedly his ghost still wanders. The sixth floor is supposedly haunted by the ghost of a young boy who committed suicide alongside his brother and mother after being abandoned by their father. In a wall behind the coat room in the hotel’s Gold Room, a mysterious hand appears to be reaching out. According to legend the hand belongs to a worker who was plastered in and suffocated. In the Florentine Room guests frequently complain that a mysterious absent woman is whispering in their ears. Security for the hotel reports that they can hear talking and commotion coming from inside the room when it is locked and empty. The spirit of a hobo named Peg Leg Johnny has also been known to haunt the entire hotel, wandering around turning on appliances and messing with light switches. The room that guests complain about the most is 441. According to visitors, a female shadow ghost lurks at the foot of the bed and kicks visitors awake.
