Hats Off to Heroes
Heroes are all around us in our community. Whether it’s the waitress at your table, the guy at church who walks with a prosthetic leg, or maybe even your uncle, or grandpa. Veterans are in all shapes, and sizes. Man, woman, old, or young. They’ve done so much for our country , so why don’t we give them something back. A Veteran center would be a great way for our community to come together as well as a great way to show our Veterans their appreciated. One reason why we should build a Veteran center in Berlin is to show our Veterans that they’re appreciate. They’ve risked their lives for us so I truly believe that it’s our responsibility to give them something back. It’s important to realize how many veterans are in our community.

They have risked their lives to protect their friends and families. It is estimated that there are over fifty-thousand homeless veterans on any given night. It is sad too see someone who literally fought and defended our country, and our lives with everything they had living in the streets, dying of hunger. It is mournful to see the government to just thank them with no reward and throw them into the streets like that.…

Today, less than one percent of the population of the United States of America puts on an uniform to protect the liberties of 99 percent of the rest of the population and just over 8 percent of the population of all living Americans are veterans. If we gaze into the eyes of a veteran we can see the love for their country, strength for their families and a courage that is indefinable. Their self-determination often provokes us to ask ourselves,"For their selfless service and willing sacrifice for their nation, what do veterans need and deserve to reestablish themselves in the society?" Indeed Abraham Lincoln, America's 16th president, formally recognized the importance of veterans with his second inaugural speech and famous quote,"To care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow, and his orphan." President Lincoln's promise to care for those who shall have borne the battle ought to be one of the greatest privileges of an American citizen.…
