William Shakespeare’s plays cover a variety of genres, each offering timeless perspectives that cause them to be performed generation after generation. Only one of these plays is often refused to be performed, on account of its potential antisemitism. Few of Shakespeare’s characters have the infamy of Shylock from the play The Merchant of Venice. Shylock is a Jewish character written as a stereotype: a secretive Jewish merchant running illegal money lending schemes in the city of Venice. Shylock has been the subject of hundreds of years of discussion surrounding racism and the nature of performance.…

However, there are some things that people hate for the well-being such as humans being racist to each other and terror attacks. Sometimes people even go out on the streets and protest in order to get their word out. I think hatred exists in the community we live in is because people have different beliefs and ideas than your own.…

Humans are, above anything else, sentimental creatures; babies know how to cry, smile, and laugh before they learn to speak and write. Prehistoric societies experienced these emotions before humans developed written language, and necessitated that words be made to encompass and express the various aspects of the emotional spectrum. Hate is one of the more intense emotions that humans experience, and formally, it is defined as “[a]n emotion of extreme dislike or aversion” or “(t)he object of hatred” (16) when it is used a noun, and as “[t]o hold in very strong dislike: to detest; to bear malice to”, generally regarded as “[t]he opposite of to love” (16). Various societies found the need to create a word that could represent this emotion, and within the English language,…

In Shakespeares, The Merchant Of Venice, a Jewish moneylender, Shylock, was in trial over a contract. This contract was between Shylock and Antonio, another main character who was a Christian, which stated that Antonio must pay back the 3000 ducats that he borrowed in 3 months, in failure to do so Antonio must give Shylock one pound of his own flesh. Antonio failed to pay him back so a trial was held and the contract was presented so that Shylock could and would be allowed to collect “his” pound of flesh from Antonio. However, this trial is clearly presented as being unfair towards him for various reasons. In my opinion, as well as many other people, the trial was only unfair towards Shylock because he was a Jewish man.…

Shylock on the other hand started out as a comedic kill-joy, but eventually Shylocks becomes a tragic figure by the end of the play. Shylock is first deemed to be a greedy Jew, hater of Christians and the devil and he very well may be when his demands one pund of Antonio’s flesh as the interest for not paying back three thousand ducants in time, simply because he “hates him for he is a Christian” and because Antonio “lends out money gratis, and brings down/ The rate of usance here with us in Venice” (1.3.38-40). Basically, Antonio is bad business for merchants like Shylock and a pound of his flesh would “feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him” (1.3.43). This solidifies Shylocks greedy nature, or how Shylock “embodies the evil side of the power of money” (Barber 190). Shylock is then the perfect kill-joy, or villain, in the play because he is so different from the Venetians, who are generous and kind Christians.…
