Hatred is an extremely powerful force, it can drive people to kill even to the extent of genocide. For instance, the Nazis in Germany during World War two. The hatred of the Nazi party was so extreme it made some of them sociopathic and indifferent towards the people they killed. This example connects to the book Bless me, Ultima because hatred drove Tenorio to kill Narciso and almost Antonio for retribution for his daughters’ deaths. This hatred is shown in what Tenorio said to Antonio “’you bastard of a witch’” (169). And to Narciso after shooting him “’may your soul be damned and go to hell!’” (169). This quote connects to the symbolism of Tenorio because he shows so much hate towards Ultima and everyone who is connected to her in a positive way that he is willing to kill a seven year-old boy because of it. For example when he shoots and kills Narciso and Ultima. In addition he tries to kill Antonio 2 times, by trying to shoot him, then running him over twice with his horse. Furthermore, Tenorio’s hatred can also be seen by what he says. As has been previously noted, “’you bastard of a witch’” (169). And “’may your soul be damned and go to hell’” (169). These like many other things that he has said have shown the hatred in his heart. These include coming to Antonio’s house with a mob to kill Ultima for being a witch and for killing his first daughter. In addition his daughters cursed Antonio’s uncle Lucas and when Ultima confronts him he says: “Ay bruja!’ Tenorio threatened with his fist, ‘For what you have said to shame my daughters and my good name in front of those men, I will see you dead’” (94). This quote also shows the anger and invidiousness of Tenorio towards Ultima. It shows that his repugnance goes beyond mere bitterness and he is willing to kill those even associated with Ultima in a positive
