Hatfield Train Crash Report

This report provides an analysis and evaluation on the Hatfield Train Crash that occurred on 17th October 2000 at 12.23. The research and findings of the report draw attention to the way in which Hatfield train crash was reported immediately after the event, including what could have been possible causes of the crash - vandalism, terrorism or fracturing of the rail or track. Research into this found that the main suspect for the cause of the crash immediately after the accident was fracturing of the rail or track. The research also includes the public’s reaction to the crash and how the numerous other rail incidents preceding the crash at Hatfield affected this. The current perception of the chain of events are discussed including details surrounding the crash; passenger numbers; staff numbers; injuries and fatalities; established causes of the event and information surrounding the subsequent investigation, fines and prosecution of those involved. The Hatfield rail crash was a significant disaster in British rail history. When an express train travelling from Kings Cross Station to Leeds caused a rail to break, the train derailed. This event lead to a major refurb of the British rail network and caused numerous disruptions across the British railway network. Several officials and two companies were put on trial for the accident at Hatfield and many changes occurred following the
