Hateful Racist Attitudes

What would they do if someone expressed a hateful, racist attitude? Would they confront the person, walk away, or let it pass? How can students state their opinions in a way that does not make them look conceited or self-important? Can they really make a difference in society and the attitudes of those around them?

Most people, presumably students, ignore or internalize offhand and offensive remarks as it typically ‘does not concern them’. They tend to avoid confronting the commenter to avoid further conflict and go on with their days. Students can present their ideas and opinions in a respectful, humble, and tactful manner to avoid offending someone and making themselves look selfish or vain. If students, and everyone for that matter, can speak in such a manner, then I believe that they can change society and its attitudes.

Do you think racism or other prejudices are present in our school or community? Why?

I know and believe that our community lacks heavily in diversity and is therefore brimming with hatred and racism. Also. within the school, whether it is a trend or just the culture of high school, the different cliques and classes tend to isolate students who don’t really fit the mold making the schools very classist.

6. Have you had a personal experience with racism in the last year? If so, what happened? I have a friend who takes racism incredibly lightly and makes offhand remarks constantly. He jokes about different religions and races almost childishly. He spams derogatory comments in group chats. I’m currently in the process of reporting him and getting outside assistance with the situation. He used to be a very gentle and shy person, but now he preys on individuals in minorities, despite himself being a minority and others with conflict in their lives.

7. Do you think racial and ethnic relations will improve in the future, or get worse?

Over this semester I think one of the most eye opening things we talked about was how women were uneducated but were the primary educators. This is crazy for me to think about, because they were expected to teach the children about everything that was going on. This also shows how much education has evolved since then. I think that it is our responsibility as teachers to the students to teach them about the issues, this can mean using other sources besides the textbook to teach the students. There are certain chunks of our history as a country that is left out in many textbooks, they try to make it seem like they are less terrible that how they really are.…
