Although the process may take a little bit, in the book Hate is My Neighbor written by Tom Alibrandi and Bill Wassmuth you can see the spiral of injustice present in every major event. The spiral of injustice, a way to track hate crimes committed, can be seen in everything read in the first third of this novel, from the beating of the Puerto Rican boy to the death threats against Scott Wiley. One quote from this book shows how advanced the spiral has gotten, “The Puerto Rican boy went sprawling and crashed into the wooden barrier with his shoulder. The boy who had cross-checked him stood over him, kicking him in the ribs.”(Alibrandi and Wassmuth 52) This is the fourth steps in the spiral, violence, the harming of others through physical acts.

Connie Fort,the mother of Scott Wiley and his little brother Lamar, is the first person to press charges on a member of the Aryan Nations after the member threatened Scott and spit in the face of a fiver year old Lamar. The evidence that Connie Fort was an upstander was clear in the novel, “We have our Rosa Parks.”(Alibrandi and Wassmuth 63) Connie Fort was compare to one of the most famous upstanders in American history, proving furthermore that she is an upstander. Another upstander was the blonde girl from the roller rink. After her boyfriend was attacked by two white men for being Puerto Rican she tried to help her boyfriend, and received a death threat in the process. The evidence is once again very prominent “‘You are a race traitor, a crime punishable by death. You are ordered to stop fraternizing with the mongrel or you will be dealt with.’...She skated slowly and unsteadily over to where her boyfriend was resting on one knee trying to catch his breath.”(Alibrandi and Wassmuth 52) This quotation shows how she risked more threats by staying with her boyfriend and not abandoning him because of the color of his skin.
