Hate crimes are crimes that someone commits based on their hatred to a person or a specific group of people. This may include, bias that they have against a person. But it could also be because the person doesn’t like one’s sexual orientation, religious preference, ethnic background, and quite possibly even their religion. Hate crimes are continuously growing at a fast pace according to yearly statistics and we see hate crimes all the way back to past times. Hate crimes go back in history in many aspects and can be from a simple assault to major incidents which could be as serious as a fire of someone’s home. The history of hate crimes dates back to ancient civilizations (History of Hate Crime). An early example of hate crimes starts with the Roman Empire in Rome, Greece. In the time of Emperor Nero the religion of Christianity was the most tolerated religion. This was true up to the year of 64 AD when a fire destroyed a great portion of Rome. Emperor Nero felt that he was being blamed for all the damages so he placed the guilt on the Christian Religion (History of Hate Crime). He blamed the Christians and he wanted anyone with in that religion be punished. After that, the following years led to excessive hate crimes towards the Christians and other religions. Another point in history that we see an excessive amount of hate crimes is over 1000’s of years from the Roman Empire. Not trying to say that there wasn’t any hate crimes in between, but the Holocaust was a prime example. When Nazi leader Adolf Hitler called for the elimination of the Jewish religion, we see a total discrimination against a specific religion. An example with in the concentration camps the Jewish were killed, beaten, and malnourished. This was one of the biggest hate crimes in history because millions of Jews were killed based on their religion (History of Hate Crime). But just like how we saw the hate crimes starting in the Roman Empire, there is lots of hate crimes in other parts of the world. Such as, currently we have ISIS (Islamic State of Iraq and Syria) is sending death threats, torture, and mutilation to compel people to switch to the Islam Religion. They have captured and killed lots of innocent civilians. Because of the ISIS terrorism, social media users have been posting derogatory comments about Arabs and Muslims (Muslim Americans). The situation for Muslim- Americans would be even more worse than it was after 9/11/01 if ISIS decided to attack the United States of America like they wanted too (Muslim-Americans). Another example for hate crime in another part of the world dates back to the month of August in 2015. Thousands of Israeli’s have held protests against hate crimes, since a Palestinian baby was burned to death when their families home was fire bombed by suspected Jewish Settlers (Israeli’s Protest). The brother and the parents of the young child were in a hospital being treated with their injuries while all of this was going on outside. The child was only eighteen months old. The home that had been destroyed was found to have the “Star of David” spray painted on it and the words, “revenge,” and “Long live the Messiah.” (Israeli’s Protest). The Ku Klux Klan started back in 1866. Their main goal was to protect white supremacy. They wanted to make it so
