Hate Bedroom Observation Report

Of all the exhibits, the “hate room” was my favorite. I learned more information about the artifacts in that room than the artifacts in any other room. I learned from the other rooms, but it wasn’t anything I didn’t have a general idea of. In the “hate room,” I saw how racial stereotyping influenced advertising. The first thing that caught my eye was the black cast iron banks. I always saw pictures of how we were depicted in the eyes of the media early on, but I never saw an actual prop. They made black people seem as if we were all extra dark people, with huge pink lips, that only ate watermelon and were only good for taking money. The Little Sambo books were great and all, but it’s one of the only books that show us as civilized in a manner.

The museum I visited was the Polk Museum of Art in Lakeland, Florida. There were three main exhibitions open, but the one I spent the most time in was the Bill Rutherfoord: Allegory of No Region. The exhibition was a culmination of eleven large scale pieces of art by Bill Rutherfoord that were done over an eight-year period. The main series, Allegory of No Region, contains paintings that take the viewer through a series of colorful allegories full of symbolism, form, and narrative. Rutherfoord, an American artist from Virginia, references contemporary and historical issues spanning from the 18th century to present times by taking the African folk character Brer Rabbit on an epic adventure through time.…

most collectable from 1880s to 1980s of African Americans are portrayed as people with exaggerated physical features and turning them into laughable and usable everyday items that reinforce the place of African Americans in society. Natives are portrayed as aliens to whites. Images of them were constructed through games, toys, theater while they reinforced racist beliefs about black people. They were framed as “others” in white Americans minds. Ads were used to present us vs them dichotomy with us being white and them being minorities.…

My trip to the Barnes Foundation museum was enjoyable and informative. On my trip, as we moved through the galleria I was astounded by how the rooms in the galleria were arranged. It was not like your average museum, with one or two paintings on the walls with a description of it underneath. Instead, there were rooms with paints all over the walls, along with iron work that correlated with the pieces. Our tour guide elaborated on how he did not wish for there to be a description under the pieces of art stating their background.…

My favorite exhibit was in the BYU Museum, “To magnify the Lord: Six Centuries of Art and Devotion”. This exhibit was full of paintings, and artwork representing the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. The religious artwork in this exhibit displays beautiful narratives of Christ’s life, and his ministry. All of the paintings in this exhibit relate back to the Savior, and they really emphasize the greatness, and the mercy of the Lord, and many of them portray events that occurred during his life. In this exhibit, I really like the painting by James T. Harwood, “Come Ye After Me”.…

For my Museum report I chose to go to the Ralph Mark Gilbert Museum. Someone I knew told me this was one of the best museum to go to and they had a lot of information on Savannah way back in the days when slavery was around. The civil rights movement made Ralph the father. When I walked into the museum the first thing that caught my eye was the parts on segregation. They had information on how colored people were treated and how whites acted towards colored.…

On Saturday, November 18, 2016, I visited the Rio Grande Valley Commemorative Air Force Museum (or just CAFM) in Brownsville, Texas. It is located on Minnesota Road by the SPI/Brownsville International Airport. Although this museum resides a few streets away from my home, I never visited before. Therefore, I gave the place a shot in impressing my brother and I. Admission costs $6 for adults, $5 for seniors 55+, $3 for kids 12-18, and FREE for kids 11 and under.…

Visiting the Carlos Museum was a great experience for me. The Michael C. Carlos Museum has a level one and a level three. Level one consists of one of the largest ancient art collections in the Southeast including objects from Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome, the Near East, Africa and ancient Americas. I was able to learn about different customs and interests that reflected certain ancient cultures. In Ancient Egypt they believed strongly in the power of sociology.…

Another thing that surprised me was the amount of information that was supplied in the museum. The museum was a two level building and honestly I was expecting one room. The things that fascinated me the most were the pictures and the secrets behind some of the most prominent features of Chicago. Did you know that the time on the green clock of the…

Another display they had that really caught my attention was a display of ageism. Each of these exhibits are organized in chronological order. The rooms that are replicated from his houses are so peaceful and calm, it really makes you feel that it was his room you were standing in. There was also a mini theatre room dedicated to his films, it was so much fun to sit and watch some of his old films and gain an appreciation of his acting career. The room dedicated to his radio career was surrounded with the sound of him doing his radio addresses, and the walls were lined with his own personal hand-written scripts. There was also a video playing of him delivering one of his addresses.…

you can gain a deeper understanding of what has occurred. The museum and the site itself give a person a window into the Antebellum time period and what happened to the people that lived in it. Another significant aspect of Mission San Jose is that it allows you to understand the general attitude towards non-Europeans, or in this case, Native American’s at the time. Despite being converted to Christianity, it’s clear that the racism towards non-Europeans was still present towards Native Americans.…

The Dallas Museum of Art was the complete opposite of what I imagined it to be like. Before attending the museum, I had very low expectations. When I thought of “art museum” I imagined dusty walls lined with undiverse and outdated art. I imagined a place old couples went to because they had nothing better to do with their time. A place where the past lingered and grew old as civilization quickly moved on and forgot about it.…

The content material that stood out to me most this week of that of the Ted Talk of the experiences of Japanese Americans during the war and also the experiences of Native Americans. I think this is extremely beneficial to my learning process as I frequently consider the perspectives of the African American and Latino population, but rarely are the experiences of Asian Americans and Native Americans at the forefront of my mind. In addition, the Classroom Divided was also impactful as I have also seen videos with Jane in the past and her work is greatly depicts the oppression and discrimination experiences by minority groups. The usage of the blue eyed vs brown eyed people experiment is extremely powerful and a great representation of what…
