Hatchet is a book where a boy, who's parents recently divorced, crash lands in the wilderness. All he had was a hatchet, given by with his mother, and he used that in many different ways to survive. He needs to use survival skills to stay alive. Eventually, a plane comes to take him out of the wilderness. There are five ways that middle school is like surviving in the wild. One of the things that Brian needs to do is make a plan. He decides that he will first find a source of water, and then a build a shelter. He needs to plan all of his actions out in the wilderness very well, or else, it might take a turn for the worse. Brian needed to make a plan because if he did something without thinking about it, then it may hinder him from doing something crucial to his survival. You need to make a plan the night before school, so that you do not forget anything. In middle school, you also need to make a plan for your schoolwork, so you do not seem overwhelmed.
In the wilderness, Brian learns to stop and think. When he is building the fire, he is having issues, and then afterwards, he stops and remembers what he had learned. He remembered that to start a fire you need oxygen, and afterwards, he blows on the fire and then it lights on fire. You need to stop and think in middle school, and clear your head. He was very self driven, and showed that when he wanted to give up, but kept on going. In school, you might want to give up on a project or test, because you are having trouble with it, but you need to be self-motivated and keep on trying. Self-motivation is important because sometimes you will be put down by people around you, but you need to motivate yourself. Brian may not have wanted to do a lot of the things he did while he was in the wilderness, but he was driven to do those things, such as going into the plane to try to get the survival bag.
