The structure of Hatchet follows the most common structure of young adult novel. Brian experience a separation, an initiation, and a return all within this one book. Brian’s separation begins when he is on the plane with the pilot, thinking about his parents’ divorce and ‘the Secret.’ It is when the pilot dies and the plane crashes that Brian’s initiation begins. The initiation portion is majority of the story then finally, Brian is rescued, denoting his return. Instead of just ending with Brian’s rescue, Gary Paulsen also gives an epilogue, explaining what happened to Brian after the rescue. Due to the survival aspect, Lord of the Flies by William Golding could be a good companion piece. Both Hatchet and Lord of the Flies both discuss the difference between wilderness and civilization. They both also discuss how quickly humans will quickly change when separated from society and those changes will last even after the event. With Lord of the Flies, how the boys solve problems and how they learned to survive could be compared to the way Brian learned. Another book that could be a good companion would be My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George. This story is very good because this is a story also about a boy who leaves the city to go live in the wilderness. Both protagonists learn how to survive in the wilderness, although in My Side of the Mountain, the main character is not completely isolated and he voluntarily chose to live in the wilderness. Both books also addresses an issue with family for the protagonists, and them having to work through it.With My Side of the Mountain, the topic of man versus nature could be discussed, along with the theme of city versus

Hatchet I believe that Hatchet has done a better job at telling the story due to. It gave a greater number of detail in the story to support whoever reads the book to more competently understand the story. For, example when the moose attacked him it gave so much detail I could feel the pain, and torture he suffered, but in the movie it did not provide as much detail as the book. When the plane crashed I could just feel the water, and I could make out the green, and blue of the lake. In conclusion I believe that the book Hatchet does a better job at telling the story than the movie Cry In The Wild.…

Could last 54 days in the canadian wilderness by yourself and only with a hatchet and torn windbreaker? In the book Hatchet by Gary paulsen brian is in a traumatizing plane crash and is in the canadian wilderness for 54 days. I think it would be hard because brian had never been alone in the middle of nowhere never even hunted and having to learn or you starve. It would be hard but he did it and he learned something that can help him in the future anytime. Brain has never done anything like this and he was really good at hunting and fishing so he would have something to eat and he made his own shelter.…

I think that Hatchet does a better job of telling the story. I believe this because. in the book the bear was eating berries and left Brain alone. I believe that Hatchet doses a better job of telling the story. I believe this because, Hatchet gives more details than the movie “A Cry In The Wild” does. In Hatchet he went to sleep like three times after the plane had crashed in the pound. But in the movie he just went to sleep ones. Also in the novel Brien called the barriers gut barriers, but in the movie he called them throw-up barriers.…

One of the things that Brian needs to do is make a plan. He decides that he will first find a source of water, and then a build a shelter. He needs to plan all of his actions out in the wilderness very well, or else, it might take a turn for the worse. Brian needed to make a plan because if he did something without thinking about it, then it may hinder him from doing something crucial to his survival. The reader can infer this when the author states, “But there is a difference now, he thought—there really is a difference. I might be hit but I'm not done. When the light comes I'll start to rebuild. I still have the hatchet and that's all I had in the first place” (Paulsen 57). This quote shows that Brian’s hope lies in the hatchet and only with the hatchet.…
