Everyone in the village had to give up a piece of gold jewelry, so that the gods would see that everyone in the village was sorry for angering Chac. Cohel and my mother started placing the jewelry on my neck and arms, and it was heavier than I thought gold could ever be. A wave of panic rushed over me and for a minute I thought I couldn’t do it. I starting taking off the jewelry and placing it beside me. Mother came over, and asked me what I was doing. I couldn’t tell her- there was no way.
