hat night, I was restless. I had nightmares that there were terrible rains that destroyed lives, towns, and even countries. Worse, the storm god, Chac, warned me that I had to do something. When morning finally came and pulled me out of my terror, I was shaken, but I tried to forget about it. I pulled on my huipil and wrapped my manta around my shoulders to keep out the morning cold, just like any other day. I looked out the window- and that’s when I knew something was wrong. Instead of being greeted with the sun shining through the Jacaranda trees, the sky was covered with grey. Dark storm clouds filled the sky, about to shatter into rain, and thunder down on us. I ran over to my parents and shook them awake. When they were at least half up, I told them they needed to come outside- right away. Then, I rushed out of our hut to see if others had noticed.

When I stepped outside, all I could hear was the constant pattering of the rain splashing down to the ground, and the wind slashing through the trees. Villagers were shouting and arguing in the streets and begging Chac for forgiveness. Suddenly someone pointed at our once plentiful fields of corn, which, just a day ago,

Everyone in the village had to give up a piece of gold jewelry, so that the gods would see that everyone in the village was sorry for angering Chac. Cohel and my mother started placing the jewelry on my neck and arms, and it was heavier than I thought gold could ever be. A wave of panic rushed over me and for a minute I thought I couldn’t do it. I starting taking off the jewelry and placing it beside me. Mother came over, and asked me what I was doing. I couldn’t tell her- there was no way. Instead, I thought about what Chac had told me and what I really wanted to do. I sighed. Did I want to do this? Or did I feel like I had to do it because Chac told me to?
